Peary's North Pole Dog, on Flag Island, Haskel & Bailey's in Distance

"Ningo, the mother of Chinook.  She was a daughter of one of the dogs on Peary's team when he discovered the North Pole.  Ningo's mother was said to be descended from a wolf."--

CHINOOK OF THE SOUTH POLE EXPEDITION
This is the story of a brave dog that went with Commander Byrd on his great expedition to Antarctica.  Chinook was his name.  Many people will remember reading about him early in the year 1929 when the papers gave the news to the people, "Chinook Has Disappeared!"  Chinook was famous throughout the country as a great leader of sled teams and had won many races.

He was a big, brown, half-breed Eskimo dog.  He held his head proudly for he had good blood in him.  It was his grandfather that led the dog team that went to the North Pole with Commander Peary, the first white man at the North Pole.  As his grandfather went to the top of the world so Chinook went to the bottom of the world when he and his master, Arthur T. Walden, and dozens of other sled dogs sailed those thousands of miles to Antarctica.  Before they left his master had a promise from Commander Byrd that no matter what was done with the other dogs, Chinook should come back with him."

And so begins the online Chinook Archives...

In particular, I'd like to encourage comments on these items from other breeders, owners, and lovers of Chinook Sleddogs that may also have first hand and/or anecdotal knowledge to add. Hereby creating an informal, online portal for sharing of more Chinook Sleddog history.
